--------------------------------------------------------------

I grew up in Pittsfield, Maine and attended Maine Central Institute where I ran cross country for 3 years and was the perennial 6 th man on the team. I contemplated running cross country at the University of Maine, until realizing that collegiate runners raced 5 mile and 10K distances, twice the maximum I had ever run before! My running was therefore put on hold in 1966, and was not resurrected until May 1980. An inner voice, along with an extra 30 pounds, spoke to me and I sprung for a pair of Sear’s running shoes, and was immediately drawn to road running and racing.

As a side note the 100,000 miles include only documented miles between April 1981 and May 2026 and exclude an estimated 1,500 miles from 5/80 to 4/81.

Some of the competitive highlights in my 45+ years of running include 5 overall road wins in my 30’s and 40’s in distances from 4 miles to the marathon and 100+ 1 st place AG wins or top 5 in race. The marathon was my passion and I ran 47 between October 1981 and April 2017. Of the 47 marathons 12 were below 2:40 and 30 under 3:00 hours. I placed in the top 5 overall in 9 marathons including 3 second place finishes and was 1 st overall at the ‘91 Sugarloaf Marathon in 2:32:30 at age 43. I ran corporate track during my working years and have held records (Maine Corporate Track) in the 1600, 3200 and 5000, both in the master and senior age groups, and currently hold the 60-69 age records at these distances, as of 2026.

My PR’s include 16:07 for 5K, 32:57 for 10K and a 2:31:10 marathon, all as a submaster. My master’s PR’s are: 2:10 for 800, 4:36 for 1600, 9:57 for 3200, 20:58 for 4 miles, 26:28 for 5 miles, 55:21 for 10 miles and 1:13:20 for the half marathon.

I am most proud of various non-competitive running achievements including:

~ Raised $75,000 for the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge dedicated to a running friend diagnosed with cancer

~ Fundraised for the National Alliance of Mental Illness of Mental Illness via walk teams

~ Volunteered with other local runners to support the Long Creek Youth Development Center (‘reform school’) by running with and mentoring the young students
